We are producing a photobook to explore the vast landscapes of Indian culture through an unconventional lens: the hand. Using photography, storytelling and design, we will uncover sub-cultures and traditions that make India the land of wonders. Our photobook 'Hands of India' will capture and display the diverse stories of how people’s hands shape their lives, lifestyles and livelihoods.

However, we are not just interested in a one-way story; we also want YOU to share in it. So, our photobook will include 100 of your questions (coming from as many communities as possible). The experiences shared through our photography and storytelling will form a dialogue with YOU-- responses to your questions being featured alongside intimate stills and vivid spreads of hands.

Very few countries present themselves in as rich a diversity of races, religions and tongues as India does. India is the land of infinite variety. Its diverse cultures form a rich, colourful collage of history, traditions and customs. Yet, so much of India is unexplored and unknown. “Hands of India” will unearth some of its many cultural gems.

Hands of India will feature two main images on each two-page spread: first, a stunning, intimate close-up of the hands of one of our Indian participants, against a filter-free, subtle background; and second, an image which captures the hands in action, telling a broader story surrounding the hand.

This method allows the hand, on its own, to speak directly to the viewers and offers them a continuous narrative of the hands in Indian culture. And this narrative will be framed by YOU!

We want to give you an opportunity to ask questions on Indian life and culture. The best 100 questions from 100 communities around the world will be featured and answered by our Indian participants. Your questions, in their hands; their answers in your hands.

The 15 x 15cm book will be a collection of 20 of such stories in a vivid display on premium lustre paper. A subtle gloss and detailed image-wrapped softcover will give Hands of India a professional finish.

Typically, the way into a country’s culture is through the window of its language, literature and landscapes. We want to turn that approach on its head! Easily the hand symbolises so much of what we do and who we are. So, a great way to explore the diversity of culture across India is to do so with the stories surrounding the hand as a tool, a symbol and as a basic part of who we are.
